As per reports, only the Green Bay Packers claimed him off waivers. And they had a good reason to do so. The team lost a pair of cornerbacks to injuries in Saturday’s loss to the Ravens: Nate Hobbs suffered a knee injury that could be season-ending, and Kamal Hadden’s ankle injury already has him on the injury reserve. The team was also thin at the position since releasing Jaire Alexander in the offseason.

And because the team claimed Diggs off waivers, they will be responsible for the remainder of the five-year, $97 million contract the player signed in 2023. However, the deal doesn’t have any remaining guaranteed money. Green Bay could cut him after this season without any salary cap consequences.

That said, the franchise will need to pay him one week’s salary, $472,000, plus another $58,823 if Diggs is active for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Packers were the only team to place a waiver claim on Trevon Diggs, per source.

It is interesting to note that none of the other 30 teams’ general managers thought they needed Diggs’ defensive skills at this time of the year.

Why did the Dallas Cowboys release Trevon Diggs?“It was a culmination of multiple factors,” Schottenheimer said shortly after the release. “Performance, other elements. He’s been an incredible player for this organization, and I really do, I truly do like Trevon a lot, I wish him nothing but the best and I’m excited to see where he lands and watch him continue his career.”

However, another factor that played a huge role was his refusal to fly back home after the Week 17 win against the Washington Commanders. Brian Schottenheimer told Diggs that everyone needs to fly back with the team, but the cornerback refused, as he wanted to spend time with his family. And though the coach understood that, he couldn’t change the protocol for one player.

There were other issues as well.

Top StoriesDiggs had been questioning defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’ scheme because he wanted more man-to-man coverage. The player also suffered a concussion and was placed on injured reserve because of issues with his right knee. He played just eight games this season. The Packers grabbed the opportunity and made a low-risk move. They were anyway focusing on the cornerback position.

On Tuesday, Green Bay signed cornerbacks Shemar Bartholomew and Jaylin Simpson from the practice squad to the active roster. Then, they also added Tyron Herring to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers might have a plan for Trevon DiggsThe player was one of the best cornerbacks early in his career in Dallas. He was selected first-team All-Pro in his second season with 11 interceptions in 2021. And that year coincided with Micah Parsons’ rookie season. Together, both lit the Cowboys’ defense.

However, the cornerback’s production has fallen since then. In the eight games he played this season, he did not record a single pick. In comparison, he had two interceptions in 11 games last season. To make matters worse, as per Pro Football Reference, opposing quarterbacks have a perfect 158.3 passer rating on 20 targets against him this season.

Regardless, the Packers will hope to upgrade a cornerback position that has struggled to be consistent, more so after Parsons’ injury. He tore his ACL in a recent road loss against the Denver Broncos. So, having Diggs on the team should help. Of course, there is no guarantee that the cornerback will play the same way he used to, but there is a chance of being stickier in coverage on the perimeter.

Plus, Parsons and Diggs share a good relationship. Once the Cowboys waived him, Diggs wasted no time in hiring David Mulugheta of Athletes First as his agent. Parsons had also leaned on Mulugheta’s help and secured a contract with the Packers.

So, it will be interesting to see how things go for Diggs. Adding the player to their team looks good on paper, but the results need to follow. What do you think?
