Bandcamp is taking a big stand against AI in music.

In a blog post, the company confirmed that it will ban music that is “generated wholly or in substantial part by AI.” It also prohibits the use of AI tools to impersonate artists or music styles. Bandcamp encourages users to report these kinds of AI-generated content for review by its team.

Notably, this makes Bandcamp the first major music platform to ban AI-generated music. Others, like Spotify, have only introduced small measures to help filter and disclose, but not prohibit, this content.

Of course, it’s an important stance to take, given the rise of AI-generated art as of late. For instance, Deezer confirmed in November that around 50,000 AI-generated songs are uploaded to its app daily, making up roughly 34 per cent of its music.

Outside of that, we’ve also seen the song “We Are Charlie Kirk” by the AI-generated act Spalexma being widely circulated in recent months. Admittedly, that’s mostly been because it’s just a big meme, but it does speak to how AI music can blow up, and it’s easy to see how bad actors might have more malicious uses of such content.

Hopefully, more platforms follow Bandcamp’s lead and take action to prevent the spread of fake music.
