Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United drawing 0-0 against Wolves at Molineux.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, some Wolves fans, plus one or two Newcastle supporters also contributing (as well as Liverpool fans and the odd Sunderland supporter pretending to be a Newcastle fan…):
‘Well that’s 2 hours of my life I won’t get back. Should have watched Colombo instead.’
‘Possibly the two worst fixtures ever to be showcased as ‘Super Sunday’ for the neutral fan. Thankfully, I didn’t watch the game, as I elected to watch the paint drying instead. Had a couple of moments when I was on edge, wondered if I’d missed a bit and it seems as though that was more exciting than Wolves v Newcastle’
‘It’s got to be said…Woltemarde, Wissa and Elanga have been shocking signings, we might as well try Miley at centre forward!’
‘Far too early to say that. They are playing in difficult circumstances with so many games in such a short time. There is no time for work on the training ground.
Players such as Joelinton, Hall, Osula, Gordon & even Miley have been criticised for their early performances and have improved – especially Joe, Hall & Miley. Thankfully Eddie has the required patience.’
‘But you toons were going on that you did not miss Isak and the team were perfect with Woltemade signing.’
‘Weren’t Newcastle fans boasting that Woltemade and Wissa were a far superior upgrade on Isak (and even Sesko, who they definitely didn’t want to sign!)?’
‘Weren’t Liverpool fans and pundits boasting that their team winning the League was a foregone conclusion when they signed Isak?’
‘Well Woltemade has scored 9 and made a few. But he’s pretty inexperienced and not really an orthodox cf.’
‘Two hours that won’t happen next season considering wolves will be relegated. Awful game to watch today.’
‘Wolves are terrible to watch. Shi is doing a great job.’
‘It’s early days. Woltemade is a great signing, however he’s not a striker, He needs Wissa (or another striker) fit & firing to put away the chances he will create.’
‘Do not forget The shockingly very poor Linton.’
‘You’d have to say that’s a missed opportunity for Wolves. Newcastle were a pale shadow of what they can be and were there for the taking especially on the break.’
‘Do not forget the raise in salary given to the invisible Linton . whoever sanctioned that deal wants sacking.’
‘Joelinton. At least get it right on your numerous posts.’
‘Elanga £55 million overpaid by £50 million plus
Wissa, absolutely terrible so far
Woltemade, too slow for premier league
Ramsey, why did we buy him, we already had better
Thiaw – only decent summer signing
Whoever was in charge of summer signings wants sacked, waisted £200 million’
‘Ramsey when fit has real class. It’s the keeping him fit part we had trouble with at Villa.’
‘Elanga was electric and pivotal at Forest so the price tag made sense. It’s never a guarantee as to how the player will do at the next club, though.’
‘You’d have to say that’s a missed opportunity for Newcastle. Wolves were there for the taking.’
‘Wolves couldn’t do that playing so low block. Draws won’t be good enough to keep them up at this stage either. It’s better to finish with a lower points tally but being able to say you tried. What’s the point of damage limitation if they are going to finish bottom playing like this anyway??’
‘On paper, it is an embarrassing result for Newcastle, just like Liverpool and Arsenal yesterday.’
‘Most of us Wolves fans know that nothing is keeping us up at this stage but seeing an improvement and the players actually putting up a fight is better than what we saw for months’
‘A point away from home in the PL is never bad -ask Burnley fans.’
‘Newcastle players are hesitant to make runs (physical fatigue) and when they make runs, other players are hesitant to try the glory pass to them (mental fatigue).
I thought Elanga did well today, really helped shift the momentum and get the crosses in, not his fault no-one was there to convert them.’
‘Newcastle team look slow and tired . Do not have the squad depth to play on four fronts. Even Man City looked a little short yesterday and look at the squad they have !’
‘Newcastle are woeful. 180m on Elanga, Wissa and Woltemade is the worst transfer business of all time I reckon.’
‘Nowhere near, that one goes to the scousers who had their trousers taken down by Newcastle with Iask.’
‘Liverpool’s £400 million flips???’
‘Your forgetting the woefull Linton .’
‘Newcastle can’t seem to balance playing in Europe and competing in the PL’
‘From a Leeds fan- why couldn’t Newcastle have played like that against us the other week!’
