Actress Glenn Close told the co-hosts of āThe Viewā on Wednesday that Vice President-elect JD Vanceās family was āgenerousā while they were filming the movie adaptation of his memoir āHillbilly Elegy.ā
Co-host Joy Behar asked Close about her Oscar-nominated role as Vanceās grandmother āMamawā in the 2020 movie, which portrayed his hardscrabble upbringing in Ohio. Close said he and his family visited the set and Vance helped the young actor who played him as a boy in the film with the role.
āWe all met members of the family. We all sat with them individually, you know, one-on-one and, for me, with Mamaw, Iād say, āhow did she walk into a room, how did she sit, how did she smoke, how did she laugh, how did she change the chemistry?ā So that was, you know, the family was very generous with their time,ā Close said.Ā
She then paused and said of Vance, āI donāt know what happened,ā seemingly in reference to his conservative politics. Close is a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party, and she said power was an āaphrodisiac.āĀ

Behar and co-host Sunny Hostin made some jabs directed at Vance during the discussion. Vance, bolstered by the attention from the book and film adaptation, ran successfully for the U.S. Senate in Ohio in 2022 before being tapped as Donald Trumpās 2024 running mate.
āHe had a whole different personality in those days than he has now,ā Behar said. āA lot of people out there are like that. āThe Invasion of the Body Snatchers,ā I think, is the name of that movie.ā
Hostin chimed in, āWell, now heās talking about childless cat ladies.ā
Reviews at the time claimed the film āHillbilly Elegyā fell short in depicting the working class. āThe politically conservative, anti-welfare streak in the authorās writing feels surgically removed,ā Rolling Stoneās David Fear wrote, while The Independentās critic Clarisse Loughrey deemed it an āirresponsible parade of death and despair.ā

Addressing the criticism in 2020, Close said that the Netflix movie āwasnāt made with politics in mind.ā

Varietyās chief film critic suggested in July that Vance may have risen to become President-elect Trumpās vice president āthanks to Hollywoodās help.āĀ
āIt was that dimension of Vanceās narrative that clearly attracted director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer ā both self-avowed liberals, who may have created a monster by legitimizing his origin story, much as āThe Apprenticeā producer Mark Burnett did by giving Trump a reality TV spotlight back in 2004,ā Varietyās Peter Debruge wrote.Ā
Vanceās 2016 memoir was a bestseller and drew attention for bringing to light the socioeconomic woes of Appalachian culture, as well as addressing issues like addiction and violence among working-class Americans.
