The Goonies never say “die,” and apparently neither does Warner Bros. After years of speculation about a potential follow up, the 1985 classic may indeed get a sequel under its belt.
Per Deadline, Warner Bros. has tapped Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry) to write a script for the film. Steven Spielberg, who created the story of the original film, will produce via Amblin Entertainment, joined by Christopher Columbus and executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner. As far as the plot’s concerned, details are unknown, as are any OG stars down to return. Still, it’s a long time coming for those who’ve wanted to see the titular misfits come back, even after some of the cast vehemently said no sequel was in development last year. But rumors from January suggested WB was starting to work on one, and here we are.
The original Goonies starred a group of misfits kids as they look for an old pirate’s treasure that could save their family’s houses from foreclosure. It was a big hit back then, and its revered status clearly still remains—much of its cast, like Ke Huy Quan, Josh Brolin, have gone to become A-list celebrities who’ve won awards and headline their own movies. In 2020, the cast reunited for a virtual fundraiser for COVID-19 back in 2020, where Spielberg admitted he had some sequel ideas in his head. More recently, the stars came back together again in January to celebrate Quan’s hand and footprint ceremony at TCL Chinese Theaters.
