It’s been 15 years since controversial TV personality, Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye was involved in a fatal car accident and Mdlalose Street in Protea Glen is still not the same.

Residents in the area spoke to Daily Sun about the road, saying they even named the street after the artist.

The devastating crash claimed the lives of four pupils On 8 March 2010 when Jub Jub and his friend, Themba Tshabalala raced through the streets.

According to residents, many other accidents followed  after the accident.

A tavern owner whose shop is on the street said the accidents don’t happen as bad as they used to over two years ago.

“They now happen once every two weeks. We sometimes have two in a week, but not major accidents, just minor ones,” said the tavern owner.

He said the last major accident was two weeks ago.

“A car overturned and the driver was obviously drunk, so he hit two other cars and he flipped. Lucky enough there were no injuries. And then two days ago a kid was hit while riding his bicycle,” he said.

The tavern owner said the accidents are not as frequent as they used to be. “Before people would die but now it’s just minor injuries,” he said.

The man said many drivers are reckless and drunk.

“Those two are a major factor and drivers don’t understand that they can’t follow another car too closely because anything that happens in front might lead to an accident and that’s one of the biggest causes of accidents on this road,” he said.

Another resident said they haven’t seen a fatal accident since 2010.

“Things are better on this road, it was even fixed and now people can walk on the sidewalks,” said the resident.

He said people just have to drive safe.

“This is a busy road so many drive drunk and that causes them to drive recklessly,” he said.
