And then there were four. The Women’s NCAA Tournament has reached the national semifinals after some thrilling games down the stretch in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. But now, it’s four of the best teams from the regular season competing for the national title in Tampa. UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and UConn make up this year’s Final Four and a pair of enticing matchups await on Friday night.
South Carolina and Texas, both No. 1 seeds, are set to face off for the fourth time this season after the Gamecocks won two of those meetings, including in the SEC Tournament Championship. Dawn Staley’s squad has been here before. The Gamecocks are looking to go back-to-back as champions and a remarkable third title in four years. Texas, meanwhile, returns to the Final Four for the first time since 2003 and looks for its second title in program history with the previous title coming in 1986.
In the other semifinal matchup, UConn and UCLA could provide some incredible fireworks. UConn, the perennial power, has been carried by star Paige Bueckers all season. The Huskies have run through all of their NCAA Tournament games so far and now get by far their biggest test against the No. 1 overall seed Bruins, powered by star Lauren Betts.
The Final Four takes place Friday in Tampa, Florida, with the national championship game on April 6.
