As per BBC News, the collision took place around 10 minutes after the Liverpool team had passed by on their open-top bus.

In a statement, Merseyside police said: “We were contacted at just after 18:00 today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.”

At a press conference on Monday evening, the North West ambulance service confirmed that 27 people had been taken to hospital, with two people, including a child, sustaining serious injuries. Another 20 people were treated at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.

Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Nick Searle, revealed that three adults and one child had to be lifted from beneath the car and were passed to the ambulance service.

Merseyside Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism related and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”

Liverpool’s city rivals, Everton, shared their own message of support on X, saying: “Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city.”

Manchester United also published a post on social media, stating: “Our thoughts are with Liverpool FC and the city of Liverpool after today’s awful incident.”

Meanwhile, the Premier League released a statement to express their shock at the “appalling events” and to send their “heartfelt thoughts” to those affected by the incident.
