Shedeur Sanders may not get another opportunity with the Cleveland Browns, or elsewhere, if he doesn’t impress during his preseason debut this Friday against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab shared a best-case, worst-case hypothetical for the “Grown QB” that included the grim warning.
“If Sanders doesn’t succeed in a difficult spot, it might be a while before he gets another chance this good, though that might depend on the health of the quarterbacks around him. His one big impression before the regular season begins might be a preseason start in which it will be a huge challenge for him to play well,” Schwab wrote.
“But the opportunity is what’s most important. When training camp began, it seemed pretty unlikely that Sanders would get enough game action or practice reps to make a significant move up the depth chart. At least there’s a path for that now.”
Sanders gets the opportunity after poorly timed hamstring injuries to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel. Joe Flacco doesn’t need any reps, per Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Tyler Huntley signed with the team on Monday and figures to immediately be in the mix for snaps this preseason. Huntley was signed to the team in March 2024 but didn’t make it to the regular season in September.
Undoubtedly, though, the focus is on Sanders and what he can accomplish in a Browns uniform in a few days.
Especially with the stakes seemingly being either a clear future in pro football or no future at all.
