The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has appealed to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to reconsider its suspension of a ValueJet pilot, Capt. Oluranti Ogoyi, and her first officer, over the August 5 security breach at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, involving Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1).
In a statement signed on Saturday by its national president, Galadima Abednego, NAAPE called for a transparent, unbiased investigation into the tarmac incident, which disrupted a Lagos-bound flight.
While acknowledging that Capt. Ogoyi could have shown better discretion, Abednego condemned KWAM 1’s “crude, unruly behaviour and arrogant display,” insisting the musician should also be held accountable.
“Aviation rests on two pillars – safety and security – and NAAPE places the highest premium on these principles,” he said, commending the aviation minister and NCAA director-general for their swift response.
Abednego urged the NCAA to reinstate the licences of the captain and first officer, stressing that the altercation stemmed from “intense provocation” from KWAM 1, which tested the patience of otherwise experienced, unblemished pilots. He also encouraged ValueJet to stand by the affected crew.
NAAPE further appealed to Nigerians, particularly air travellers, to cooperate with airport and airline officials, emphasising that passenger restraint is crucial for flight safety.
KWAM 1, who initially denied wrongdoing, was placed on a no-fly list by the aviation ministry. He later issued a statement on Friday expressing regret for his actions.
If you’d like, I can also prepare a shorter, punchier entertainment-news version for social media that blends aviation news with celebrity drama – that could help it go viral.
