Portugal is a bit of an unsung hero as a triathlon destination, often being overlooked in favour of Mallorca. But with 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, stunning beaches, mild climate and smooth roads, it should certainly be on your radar. And if you’re looking for a late season full distance race – IRONMAN Portugal-Cascais is a great option.
Only a short trip away from Lisbon, the charming coastal town of Cascais offers sandy beaches and a historic old town. Race day features a sunrise bay swim, followed by a rolling bike course including a loop of the F1 circuit. With 216m of elevation gain, the run course is a little more rolling than other M Dot races on the circuit. But you’ll have plenty of fan support as you make your way along the coastal road, through the buzzing atmosphere of the marina and into the heart of Cascais. This year’s general entries are sold out, but special entries are still available so if you’re looking for a sunshine getaway just as the autumn/fall weather starts to blow in at home – there’s still a chance to get on the start line.

But this isn’t a case of swim-bike-run-done. Because once you’ve completed a trip up and down the mountain, you’ll then hop back on your bike to ride 26km back to Kinlochleven, finishing the day with a 1.5km trail run to get to the finish.
The ROC Scotland is a seriously tough day out, but if you’ve got a strong summer of training under your belt and you’re up for the challenge – this could be an epic way to finish your season.
