Who knew?
A Reddit user posted last week, showcasing that after strapping a bunch of overkill SSD heatsinks to an iPhone, they got much better sustained performance.
It’s a neat project and looks kind of fun on the Cosmic Orange model, but it’s obviously overkill compared to MagSafe fan coolers. There also appear to be two tiny fans in this unit that need to be powered by motherboard fan headers, so it’s not fully passive either.
The poster seems to suggest that this will help with prolonged days of filming, but with this much added heft, I think it defeats the purpose of the small iPhone camera. That said, if there were a smaller version of something like this that didn’t use a fan, it still might be able to help, but once you get outside and in the sun, and the heatsinks also get hot, I’m not sure how effective this type of solution will be.
If you’re a gamer, it seems like MagSafe fan accessories like this one on Amazon are popular with Pokémon Go players since they need to play in direct sunlight for a long period of time.
