Alibaba-owned Amap is preparing to enter the robotaxi sector with plans to expand globally, according to a report by Sina Tech, a Chinese technology media outlet. The initiative is described internally as a strategic-level business that will become a key growth driver for the company.

Amap, a major provider of digital maps, navigation, and real-time traffic services in China, was fully acquired by Alibaba in 2014 for US$1.5 billion. The company’s existing mobility services — including driving, ride-hailing, and public transit — are seen as highly compatible with autonomous driving development. [Sina Tech, in Chinese]
