Amorim: This is not acceptable
Sunday 19 January 2025 17:28
Ruben Amorim has provided his assessment of Manchester Unitedās 3-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The head coach bemoaned the nature, and timing, of the goals we are conceding at the moment and stressed losing so many matches is not acceptable.
He also underpinned his faith that his methods will work and that the Reds will turn things around, once some confidence can be instilled into the players.
See some of what Ruben had to say during his interviews with the official broadcasters at Old Traffordā¦
WE WERE TOO ANXIOUS
āIt was similar to other games. We suffer some goals we shouldnāt suffer and then itās really hard to have possession because we are really anxious. We played some good football but only in small spaces of time. So it was not consistent and we get nervous and then suffer a goal again in the beginning. Then itās really hard to turn things around. We get really anxious and really nervous and they were better. Itās palpable outside the pitch and everything gets really messy.ā
HOW DO YOU STOP THE NERVES?
āYou cannot train it. You try to find the right space to press and not press really high. Itās trying to find those things you need to win and to be comfortable.āĀ
FALLING BEHIND
āWe can manage by not suffering the goal in the beginning and put the fans on our side. You know what I mean, put the momentum with us. It is always the opposite and then, to lose again at home, itās not acceptable.ā
HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF THIS?
āItās going to be like that until the end [of the season] because itās really hard to work on the pitch. We will have find a way to win matches. The only way is to give some confidence to the players is to win games. The only thing I know how to do it is help seeing the game how I see it. We need to be better and that is really clear. It doesnāt matter if I have a lot of time to know our players, or not, we need to change that. So we continue to work and to change these details that can change the games.āĀ
THIS SHOULDNāT HAPPEN
āYou have to understand the moment but understand also that it is not to lose so many games in the Premier League, no matter the situation. No matter the moment. It should not happen. They were comfortable and we tried with not very good football. You can see this game and remember nothing. We cannot also end the game like that, with everybody out of position. So we have to end the game in a different way. No matter the result, we have to be a different team.ā
I WONāT CHANGE
āThat is clear for me. With me, itās clear Iām not going to change the way I see the game. Iām very clear on that. The players will suffer and the fans are going to suffer. Iām really sorry, I have one way of doing things. We need to survive this moment and itās very clear for everybody what we are going to do. Iāve explained this situation. I will play the way I play because that was the idea. I was very clear in everything, with the fans, the board and everybody. They knew what to expect with me. But itās not the important thing, itās not acceptable to lose so many games. In five games at home, to lose four and win one, is really hard for any club. Imagine it at Manchester United ā so we need to improve.āĀ Ā
WHATāS NEXT?
āWe just focus on winning the next game [against Rangers in the Europa League]. This is the best way of turning things around in this moment. Forget the classification. Forget the cups. Every game is an important moment to improve the team. There are moments in our life as a professional footballer that everything goes against us. Like I said, itās really hard but we have to work to try to be more confident and to win games.ā
ARE YOU STILL CONFIDENT?
āOf course. I have confidence, already I knew this, and I understand itās a game of results. The fans are getting really frustrated. I understand that and relate to that.ā
