Make sure you don’t get put on a toll route if you’re driving in the Greater Toronto Area

If you’re an Apple Maps user in Ontario, you might want to be extra careful right now on certain highways.

As first spotted by MacRumors, several people have taken to Reddit to report that Apple Maps is taking them onto the Highway 407 ETR (Express Toll Route) even though they have “avoid tolls” turned on. The original poster even says they tried inputting alternative routes that could have taken the QEW but were still directed to the 407.

Exact tolls vary depending on a variety of factors, including vehicle type, time of day and highway section, but rates can approach the $0.80 range per kilometre, so it can definitely add up.

For what it’s worth, I was able to replicate the issue on my own iPhone. I live in Mississauga and regularly go to Newmarket to visit my grandparents, and the first two of the three route options included the 407, even with avoid tolls turned on. The third option, which took several minutes longer, did offer alternative directions involving the 427, 401 and 400. But of course, Maps shouldn’t be listing any options with tolls if you have the setting turned on.

MacRumors says this has been a problem since at least July 4, but it might have been a problem for longer. MobileSyrup editor-in-chief Jon Lamont notes that he’s had issues with Apple Maps erroneously directing him onto the 407 dating back as far as last year.

It’s unclear why Maps is doing this, especially as it never used to. As MacRumors points out, the Ontario government recently removed tolls from Highway 407 East, so perhaps Apple accidentally did so for the entire highway instead of just the eastbound stretch.
