Atlanta United has begun a search for its new head coach after a disappointing 2025 season.

Ronny Deila has been fired as head coach of the Five Stripes, the club announced Sunday. Deila was hired to the role in December 2024 but struggled to get Atlanta United playing consistent soccer throughout the season.

The Five Stripes won just six of 37 matches this year with Deila in charge. They registered only 28 points in league play this season and their -25 goal differential was the third-worst in the Eastern Conference.

“It was evident that our standard of play was not met this season, and together with our senior leadership team, we have decided that it was in Atlanta United’s best interest to move the team in a different direction. Ultimately, we owe our fans a much better on-field product and it is our unwavering commitment to provide that to this community as soon as possible,” Atlanta United CEO and President Garth Lagerwey said. “We want to thank Ronny for his time and commitment to the organization and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The Norwegian manager helped New York City FC lift MLS Cup in 2021, winning 51% of his matches in charge there. Deila has also managed European clubs Celtic, Club Brugge, Standard Liege, and Valerenga.

Atlanta United has not qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs in two of the last five seasons.
