A season ago, Austin Vandegrift and Austin Westlake both played for a state championship.
On Friday night, the Vipers barely stayed alive on the road to a repeat. Placekicker Wiley Olson, an SMU commit, drilled a 36-yard field goal on the game’s final play as Vandegrift survived a Texas UIL 6A Division II bi-district playoff against Westlake, with the Vipers claiming a 16-14 win.

SECOND QUARTER- TOUCHDOWN VANDEGRIFT. Vipers literally strike back. After Sam Brown breaks loose on a 70-yard run, he finishes things off by going in from 2 yards out. Four-point Westlake lead. (Westlake, 14-10 | 2nd)
– TOUCHDOWN WESTLAKE. Chaps extend their lead on a Rees Wise 3-yard TD run, completing a 12-play, 68-yard drive. (Westlake, 14-3 | 2nd)
– FIELD GOAL VANDEGRIFT. Vipers advance deep into Westlake territory before the drive stalls. They do convert on a 19-yard field goal, cutting into the Chaps’ lead. (Westlake, 7-3)
– Westlake takes its seven-point lead into the second quarter.
FIRST QUARTER- TOUCHDOWN WESTLAKE. An impressive 12-play 75-yard opening drive for the Chaps ends with a 1-yard plunge from Sebastian Henault touchdown run. (Westlake, 7-0)
