Torino will face Roma in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 after Cesare Casadei’s header allowed them to squeeze past 10-man Pisa, who had Juan Cuadrado sent off.

It had been a rough start to the campaign for both Serie A sides, as Toro were coming off a 3-0 home defeat to Atalanta, while Pisa had lost three on the bounce.

Cesare Casadei’s header went just wide on a Marcus Pederson cross, but moments later the hosts took the lead with a similar move. On the Cyril Ngonge corner, Casadei managed to nod into the far bottom corner to open the scoring.

Pedersen’s effort was deflected past the post, while Casadei forced a save under the bar.

Lorran did have the ball in the net during first half stoppages for Pisa, but had wandered offside on the Isak Vural assist.

Torino also thought they had scored at the dawn of the second half with another corner, this time Ngonge’s cross finding Ardian Ismajli to fire in from six yards, but it was disallowed by VAR for handball.

Pisa went down to 10 men for the final half-hour, as veteran Juan Cuadrado was shown a straight red card for insulting the referee.

Louis Buffon, the son of Gianluigi, made his seasonal debut for Pisa, while Marcus Pedersen stung Simone Scuffet’s gloves.

Despite being down to 10 men, Pisa almost equalised in stoppages, Alberto Paleari getting down for a desperate save on Matteo Tramoni’s angled drive.
