The U.S. women’s national team will garner plenty of excitement in Thursday’s home friendly vs. Portugal at Subaru Park, but the absence of star forward Trinity Rodman has certainly dampened the mood in camp.

Rodman, who was originally named to Emma Hayes’ October roster, was forced to withdraw after suffering an MCL sprain with her club Washington Spirit. The talented winger missed six months of international opportunities due to continuous back injuries, last featuring for the USWNT back in April.

Rodman has made 47 appearances for the USWNT to date, scoring 11 goals and adding nine assists. She’s lifted six trophies with the program, including winning a Gold Medal at the Summer Olympics in 2024.

An NWSL title-winner, Rodman’s versatility and creativity bring a major spark for the USWNT’s attack when she’s on the field. However, her recent absence continues a frustrating year for the California native, opening the door now for others to fill her spot.

While Hayes is “disappointed”absolutely bummed” that Rodman’s wait will continue, she is hoping to see the 23-year-old back on the field this year for club and country.

“While she understands these setbacks happen, she’s equally disappointed because she desperately wanted to be here,” Hayes said in a Wednesday press conference. “Fortunately, it’s not too far, and I hope that she’s back in playoff contention and she’ll be back for the next camp.”

The USWNT will take on Portugal twice over the next four days before closing their three-match window against New Zealand in Kansas City on Oct. 29.
