Battle for England recallProving himself again
Phil Foden produced a standout performance at the Etihad, reminding both Manchester City and England supporters of his remarkable ability. Last season had been a difficult one for the 25-year-old, with City enduring a rare trophyless campaign and the midfielder struggling with injuries and personal issues.
Now, Foden appears to have rediscovered his spark. With four goals and three assists from 13 matches, he looks back to his confident, expressive self. His display in the 4-1 Champions League victory against Borussia Dortmund was particularly impressive, as he overshadowed Erling Haaland for once this season.
“I’m enjoying my football,” he told TNT Sports. “It’s important for me to play with a smile. The previous year was hard for everyone, but now there’s a strong sense of unity.” City’s attacking fluidity and Foden’s renewed freedom have made him a central figure again in Pep Guardiola’s setup.
Battle for England recall
Foden has not featured in England’s last two squads and previously made himself unavailable for international duty. With the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania, his recent form has reignited discussion about a possible recall.
Competition remains fierce. Jude Bellingham, who has been out injured, and Morgan Rogers are among those pushing for the attacking midfield spot. Yet, Foden’s combination of creativity, control, and composure could make him indispensable to Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
Guardiola expressed confidence in his player’s international prospects, saying: “Thomas is very smart and understands exactly what England needs. Everyone knows Phil’s talent, but the national team has many quality players. He just has to keep proving himself.”
Having stepped out from the shadow of Kevin De Bruyne after the Belgian’s departure, Foden has taken greater responsibility this season. His maturity and consistency have drawn praise from his manager and supporters alike.
Proving himself again
Foden’s double against Dortmund was a reminder of his attacking edge. It also extended his tally of goals from outside the box to 11 since the start of last season – the most by any Premier League player in that time. Guardiola praised his resurgence, stating: “He is already back to his best. We missed his goals and creativity, and today he showed both.”
His contributions have come after a careful return from an ankle injury that limited his minutes early in the season. Highlights include a goal in the Manchester derby and an assist for Haaland in the Champions League win over Napoli.
Former City midfielder Michael Brown believes Foden’s form makes him impossible to overlook: “When Foden is at his best, he can change games. He’s more mature now, eager to play, and knows his role. England needs that energy and imagination.”
After earning individual awards and helping England reach the Euro 2024 final, Foden now seeks another opportunity to shine on the international stage. Whether Tuchel grants that chance will soon be revealed.
