An assistant football coach at Winfield High School and former NFL player is facing multiple charges following an altercation with a Winfield Middle School coach, who also serves as a Putnam County deputy.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Putnam County Magistrate Court, Christopher Massey of Winfield has been charged with obstructing an officer, battery, trespassing after being asked to leave, and disorderly conduct.

The complaint states the incident occurred at a Winfield Middle School football practice, where Massey’s son was participating and the deputy was assisting as a coach. Authorities allege that after the deputy spoke with Massey regarding his son’s practice, Massey became disruptive and irate. The deputy then ended the conversation, asked Massey to leave the premises, and attempted to de-escalate the situation.

When the deputy walked to his cruiser to retrieve handcuffs and pepper spray while calling for backup, Massey reportedly continued pacing the parking lot and attempting to argue. Despite multiple warnings to leave, Massey allegedly refused and stepped “nose-to-nose” with the deputy, telling him he was not leaving.

The complaint notes that the deputy, though off duty, identified himself as law enforcement and informed Massey he would be arrested if he did not comply. Officials also stated this was not the first confrontation between the two men, who have had previous disagreements in their roles as assistant coaches.

Massey, a former standout at Marshall University who went on to play in the NFL, is now facing court proceedings related to the charges.
