Google announced today that “document upload is now available to all Gemini users” using the web, Android, and iOS apps. This started rolling out last week.

Update 2/25: Following last week’s announcement, Google today detailed that the free Gemini app has a 32,000 token context window or “around 50 pages of text” and “usage limits” on file uploads.

Original 2/20: Google introduced document upload for Advanced subscribers last May. It’s now available for free accounts, with users able to upload “multiple” Google Docs, PDFs, and Word documents with Gemini 2.0 Flash. This includes direct upload from the web or mobile device, as well as through a Google Drive file picker.

You can ask for “quick summaries, personalized feedback, and actionable insights.”

On Android, file upload unlocks “Ask about this PDF” in Files by Google and “Talk Like about this” on Pixel 9 series and Galaxy S24/S25.

As of today, free users cannot upload spreadsheets or code files. That still requires a Gemini Advanced subscription, while Google’s announcement this afternoon does not specify the context window beyond “multiple” documents. (Paid users can upload up to 1 million tokens.)

To get started, tap the ‘plus’ in the Ask Gemini field where you’ll see Files and Drive join the existing Camera and Gallery options.
