Toronto-based phone accessory company Dbrand is giving us all the opportunity to perpetually touch grass without leaving our screens behind.
The company’s latest skins, dubbed the ‘Touch Grass collection,’ let customers wrap their electronics in artificial turf so they can always touch grass. Despite the timing of the reveal, the Touch Grass collection is real and available to purchase. However, it is only available for a limited time and Dbrand warns it might not be able to replace grass skins in the future.
Skins start at $34.95 and can go up to as much as $79.95 depending on the device. (Most phones are on the cheaper end, while larger devices like MacBooks cost more.)
Per The Verge, the grass skins are covered in thousands of tiny polyethylene strands that are attached via a technique called ‘electrostatic flocking.’ This involves electrically charging each strand and propelling it onto an adhesive-coated surface.
Dbrand told The Verge that customers shouldn’t have to worry about the strands coming off. Dbrand put the skins through a 10,000-cycle abrasive rub during durability testing and didn’t have any issues with strands detaching or bald patches forming.
One issue the company did come across was that the grass skins are effective lint catchers — not a great thing to put on something that will live in people’s lint-filled pockets. But apparently a gentle wipe can clean the skin effectively, so it shouldn’t be too big of a problem.
You can buy a Touch Grass skin on Dbrand’s wonderfully-retro store page.
