Alex Palou’s IndyCar resume had one big blank on it.

Until today.

The three-time IndyCar Champion had never won the Indianapolis 500, until today. Palou made an overtake of Marcus Ericsson stick with 15 laps to go, and Palou was able to hold off the winner of the 2022 Indianapolis 500 over the final laps to secure his first win in the 500, and secure his place on the Borg-Warner Trophy.

Palou took the checkered flag under caution, due to a crash in the back of the pack on the final lap.

“I can’t believe it, what an amazing day,” said Palou to FOX Sports after the checkered flag.

It is also his first win on an oval, and what a place to accomplish that feat.

Sunday’s race was a chaotic affair before, and during, the first 100 laps. Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin crashed on a pace lap, ending his afternoon before the race even began. Another crash in the opening laps cut Marco Andretti’s day short, and NASCAR Cup Champion Kyle Larson’s spin after a restart ended his dream of completing “The Double” on Lap 92, a spin that also caught up Sting Ray Robb and Kyffin Simpson.

There were also several incidents on pit lane. A fire during a pit stop on Lap 73 ended the run from Alexander Rossi, winner of the 2016 Indianapolis 500. Pole-sitter Robert Shwartzman’s day ended along pit lane as well, in this scary incident:

Another Team Penske driver endured a tough end to their afternoon, as Josef Newgarden’s dreams of a third-consecutive win in the Indianapolis 500 ended due to an issue with his car:
