ISDE Day 5: Josep Garcia Extends Lead Over Andrea Verona as Rain Shortens Racing in Italy

Italy’s Andrea Verona is in second overall behind the multi-time ISDE champ, Josep Garcia.

As the 2025 ISDE closed Day 5, the final day of special test racing before the Day 6 final moto, the organizers and riders had to adjust, as heavy rains hammered the Lombardy province, and the penultimate day of racing was shortened. Only four special tests were run on Day 5 instead of the scheduled six, as well as an hour later start time, since the total day length would only be completed in five and a half hours. All these changes gave riders fewer opportunities to make up time on their competitors.

Spain’s Josep Garcia doesn’t seem to be fazed by the rainy conditions on day 5.

In the opening test of the morning at the Cavalli cross test, it was current leader Josep Garcia taking the win by six seconds over his closest challenger Andréa Verona. The Italian favorite would claim the next two special test wins, but would only pick up a second over the perennial ISDE winner. Garcia would take the final test win by over a second and a half over Verona, and take the Day 5 victory by just under six seconds. Garcia now carries a forty-second lead over Verona heading into the final moto tomorrow. Third scratch once again would be Sweden’s Mikael Persson. The veteran rider would finish thirty seven seconds off the pace of Garcia with 4-5-3-11 placement finishes in the day’s special tests. Kyron Bacon of Australia was once again the leading Junior rider, showing that living in Italy for 2025 has certainly been an advantage at this year’s ISDE. Samuéle Bernadini would round out the top five on the day, posting a third place in the final special test of the week. Johnny Girroir was once again top American for the day, leading the back half of the top ten on the time sheets. Italy’s Morgan Lesiardo would finish seventh for the day ahead of U.S.A.’s Grant Davis, who had a third of his own in the second test of the morning. Australia’s Josh Strang displayed veteran knowledge on Day 5, claiming ninth in the overall day standings. Kevin Cristino was the third Junior in the order, rounding out the top ten and helping solidify the host nation’s spot atop the Junior Trophy leaderboard.

Cody Barnes had another day inside the top twenty standings, finishing seventeenth at the close of Day 5. Danté Oliveira was consistent in the two mud tests, as well as the two rock tests, finishing twenty fourth on the day. Cooper Jones would have one of his better performances of the week, finishing thirty sixth on the day with the help of a sixth in the third test of the afternoon. Josh Toth, beaten and battered after five days of racing, finished less than a second behind his Junior teammate, ending the day in thirty seventh position. Matéo Oliveira had a stronger performance compared to Days 3 and 4, ending the week with a fifty eighth position on Day 5.

Brandy Richards would take the final test win of the day, along with consistency in the other three tests, claimed the Day 5 victory in the Women Trophy individual results. Half a second behind with one test win of her own was teammate Korie Steede. Australia’s Danielle Macdonald would win the first test of the morning, claiming third scratch at the close of Day 5. Canada’s Shelby Turner would take the remaining Day 5 test victory, ultimately finishing fourth on the afternoon. Rachel Gutish would close out the top five, thus virtually guaranteeing victory for the U.S.A. in the Women World Trophy classification.
