But it ended up backfiring in their face.

Paul and Wembanyama thought they could game the system by quickly chucking up shots that had no chance of going in, in order to get a faster time.

The rule stated that if you missed three shots in a row, you automatically moved on; so the pair tried to get away with just flinging the balls rapidly in the vicinity of the hoop, without a genuine effort, to advance.

The boos rained down on the two Spurs, who were quickly notified that they had been disqualified.

Team Spurs was officially disqualified for failing to make a “valid effort” on their jump shots.

“To see if we (could have) the best time. It was fun.”

Wembanyama insisted that it was his idea to bend the rules in their favor.

The winners of the NBA Skills Challenge were a pair of Cleveland Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley.

Silver and the NBA have tried to raise the overall intensity of All-Star Weekend, but have had to face an uphill battle.

And so far, not much has changed.
