Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks are in freefall, going from NBA Final contenders to looking like a potential postseason disaster. There has been a lot of speculation about Bucks’ superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo being traded to the Knicks. New York beat writer James L. Edwards III believes that the Knicks’ best offer to acquire Antetokounmpo can be centered around Towns.

In a recent conversation with Bucks insider Eric Nehm, Edwards revealed the Knicks’ stance about trading their big man.

Knicks Insider Does Not Discard the Possibility of Trading Karl-Anthony Towns
Edwards said, “The Knicks were and will continue to be interested in Giannis (Antetokounmpo). Why shouldn’t they be? He’s, arguably, the best player in the conference.”

“I do believe New York thought it had enough to win an NBA title without him. I wonder if those feelings have changed as of late. So, yes, the Knicks should want Giannis right now. Something isn’t right with this team. The pieces aren’t meshing. The defense is atrocious.”

As for the ideal package for Antetokounmpo, Edwards proposed, “Karl-Anthony Towns, Pacome Dadiet and every pick that I have eligible to trade,” while claiming that the Knicks’ stance about trading Towns is open.

“…as New York continues to free-fall, and I keep talking to people around the league, it would not stun me if Karl-Anthony Towns got traded. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it’s something I’m monitoring,” Edwards added.

Towns was seen as the missing piece to get the Knicks to the NBA Finals, and after a trip to the Conference Finals in 2025, the Knicks were favored to go all the way. But, after starting the season 23-9, the Knicks have had a terrible stretch, losing the last four and sitting at 25-18.

Now, with the Eastern Conference wide open and head coach Mike Brown publicly questioning Towns’ effort and ability, Knicks President Leon Rose might be exploring options for the four-time All-Star.

The former Minnesota Timberwolves star signed a four-year, $220,441,984 deal with his old franchise in 2022. He will earn $53,142,264 this season. Towns is arguably one of the best shooting big men in the league, averaging nearly 40% from three in his career.

Right now, with Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks struggling in 11th and the Knicks going through a slump, it would probably make the most sense for each team to look for a trade in their best interests.

The ‘Greek Freak’ has been loyal to a Bucks franchise that drafted him in 2013, winning the 2021 NBA Championship and 2024 NBA Cup. The truth is, the Bucks haven’t been competitive in a couple of years, and for a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber, he deserves another shot at a title.

The Greek sensation has been unstoppable again this season, averaging 28.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. The two-time MVP and 10-time All-Star is a scary defensive proposition for any team in the NBA, but with Jalen Brunson as his running mate, how could they be stopped?

There is no question that the Knicks would have to give up more than just Towns in a trade, but Antetokounmpo playing at Madison Square Garden is a basketball fan’s dream.
