We should have expected nothing less than Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee producing a terrific performance to ace the 2025 London Marathon on Sunday.

The Paris 2024 gold medal hero made massive headlines earlier this year when he announced that he would be putting the focus on running – and specifically marathon running – for the first part of 2025. With the London Marathon, that iconic race in his home country, the target.

Yee devoted himself to being good at this, as he does everything, and that hard work and training paid dividends as he produced a terrific time of 2:11:08 on his debut over the full distance. That was good enough for 14th place in the men’s Elite race behind winner Sabastian Sawe, and also to be the second British athlete home after Mahamed Mahamed.

Yee started with a blistering 1:04:19 for the first half of the race, which saw him reach that stage in 22nd position. He was paced through the first 30km by fellow British triathlon phenom Hugo Milner.

While the closing stages clearly were tough going, he surged up into that final 14th position, passing fellow Brits Jack Rowe and Philip Sesseman in the process. It was a terrific first effort at his big new challenge.

Alex Yee London Marathon analysis

We asked our triathlon expert John Levison to put into context what Alex achieved in the capital on Sunday. He was impressed.

He said: “Broadly – he gave himself the opportunity to achieve his best. Any talk of 2:07 in some quarters- in my opinion – was unrealistic, but running 25km + of perfect pacing in the 2:08:30 region gave the chance, on a great day, to hold close to that as he went into the unknown final km’s.

“The marathon came to bite a bit from 30km, but he might never have the chance, in his prime years (due to triathlon commitments) to give it full beans, and that was always the unknown.

“He took that chance – as a London boy on a beautiful day, I hope he enjoyed it, and should have no regrets!”
