Manchester United suffered yet another defeat on Sunday as they were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle United.
The Red Devils have endured a dismal campaign so far and currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.
Ruben Amorim’s side are therefore set to miss out on qualification for next season’s Champions League, although they could still qualify for the competition by winning the Europa League this term.
In the meantime, it has emerged that Amorim could be plotting a move for one of his former players.
According to CaughtOffside, Amorin and those in charge of United’s recruitment are considering a move to sign Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio.
The 23-year-old has been in fine form for the Portuguese side over the past couple of seasons, but it appears that the defender’s impressive displays have attracted interest from elsewhere.
Inacio was managed by Amorim at Sporting
It is claimed that Amorim is keen to work with Inacio again, having enjoyed a successful spell together in the Portuguese capital during which time they won the top flight title together.
Inacio is under contract until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, but the report suggests that United are one of a number of clubs interested in the player.
Manchester City and Liverpool are also said to be interested in the player, while German giants Borussia Dortmund are also credited with an interest in the Portugal international, who has been capped 14 times by his country at senior international level.
United are also said to still be interested in Everton and England defender Jarrad Branthwaite, as they search for defensive reinforcements.
Current United centre-backs Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof face extremely uncertain futures at Old Trafford, and Amorim could therefore need to bolster his squad this summer.
