A man from Fitchburg, Massachusetts, struck lottery gold twice in one evening after mistakenly purchasing two identical Powerball tickets for the same draw.
Paul Corcoran bought a $2 multi-draw Powerball ticket for seven games, believing the last draw on the ticket had already taken place. Shortly after, he visited a different store and purchased another $2 ticket which also included the July 9 drawing.
To his surprise, both tickets matched all five white ball numbers 5, 9, 25, 28, and 69 earning him $1 million per ticket. He missed only the red Powerball number, 5, just shy of the $217 million grand prize.
Corcoran, who has been playing the same set of randomly chosen numbers for years, collected his $2 million winnings at the Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters.
The winning tickets were sold at Market Basket in Fitchburg and Country Farms in Leominster. Each retailer will receive a $10,000 bonus.
According to state lottery officials, these are the first $1 million Powerball wins recorded in both Fitchburg and Leominster.
