Offense:

The major concern for the Aggie offense will be how well newcomers on the o-line can gel and improve over last season. Behind the new look o-line, there is some reason for excitement in Las Cruces. QB Logan Fife comes over to NMSU after leading FCS Montana to the playoffs last season. With him in the backfield are a pair of RBs, Kadarius Calloway (Cal) and Dijon Stanley (Utah), with Power 4 experience. On the outside, WR PJ Johnson and TJ Pride return after leading the Aggies in receiving a year ago, the later earned all conference honors as a specialist.

Defense:

Simply put, the defense needs to improve. The Aggie defense ranked at the bottom of almost every statistical category in the nation. On the bright side, NMSU returns its leading tackler from last season, LB Tyler Martinez. Martinez, along with fellow starter Stone Aupiu, will be looked at as the leaders and anchors of the defense. S Nick Session will be the leader in the secondary. It remains to be seen how the transfer pieces that were brought in will perform, but there is some optimism around the program that this unit will be improved over last season.

Analysis:

The Aggies made the move to bring in OC Dave Yost this offseason. Yost has plenty of experience in college football and should be able to utilize Fife in a way that makes the offense a more balanced attack. The defense is a question mark, but the only real way to go up is up. There is more talent on this roster than in previous years, which shows a positive trajectory for the program. Although a bowl game may be unattainable, improvement over last year’s win total is possible.
