The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has cut ties with the Church of Wales following the election of Bishop Cherry Vann, an openly gay cleric, as Archbishop of Wales.

Primate Henry Ndukuba announced the decision at the Church Conference of Chancellors, Registrars, and Legal Officers in Abuja, condemning the election as an “abomination” and a violation of biblical teachings.

“A few days ago, the media went awash with the news of the action of the revisionists in the Western Church in the United Kingdom, specifically in the Church of Wales. These individuals have not relented from their evil agenda; rather, they have intensified it.

Ndukuba criticized Vann’s election, calling it an “abomination” and expressing concern over her sexual orientation.

He noted that Vann, who was nurtured within the church from acolyte to bishop, only came out after becoming a bishop and has since defended her stance.

Citing the Church’s similar response to the consecration of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in 2003, Ndukuba reaffirmed their rejection of her election as Archbishop of Wales.

“Just as the Church of Nigeria took steps after the election of Gene Robinson, we are severing all ties and relationships with the Church of Wales.”

However, he expressed solidarity with orthodox Anglicans in Wales, pledging support through the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) and other conservative factions.
