The pre-orders were originally set to go live on April 9
Update: 21/04/2025 at 10:17 a.m. ET — Nintendo has confirmed that Switch 2 pre-orders will now open in Canada on April 24 following a delay.
Original story below:
Nintendo has confirmed that pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 have been delayed in Canada past their originally scheduled April 9 start date.
“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.,” Nintendo of Canada said in a statement to MobileSyrup. “Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”
Last week, Nintendo delayed Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. in “order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” However, the company confirmed that pre-orders were still set to open in Canada on April 9. Now, we know that’s changed.
Nintendo held its big Switch 2 Direct and global media preview on April 2, during which it fully unveiled the console and its software lineup, June 5 release date and $629 pricing. However, U.S. President Donald Trump announced tariffs just hours later on a variety of countries, including China and Vietnam where Nintendo manufactures hardware. As a result, many were wondering how Nintendo would respond.
It remains to be seen when pre-orders will eventually open for the U.S. and Canada. We’re also still waiting for official confirmation of Switch 2 games and accessories pricing. So far, the company has confirmed it will adopt “variable pricing” on the new console, with some games, like Mario Kart World, costing $US$79.99 (about C$113), while others, like Donkey Kong Bananza, will cost US$69.99 (about $100 CAD). We’ve reached out to Nintendo of Canada for official Canadian pricing and will report back once we learn more.
In the meantime, check out our hands-on Switch 2 impressions of both the system itself and its games, as well as our interviews with the main hardware architects and Nintendo of America’s Nate Bihldorff.
