The University of Calabar, UNICAL has ordered all 200 to 600-level students in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery to leave campus due to over-admission exceeding the approved quota.
The directive was issued following a meeting between Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the affected students, and their parents.
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has instructed all students enrolled in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery from 200 to 600 levels to vacate the campus following revelations of over-admission far beyond regulatory limits.
This directive came after a meeting involving the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi, the affected students, and their parents. During the meeting, the institution admitted it had accepted significantly more students into the program than the quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
Affected students expressed deep frustration, revealing that they had already invested millions of naira in tuition, accommodation, textbooks, and other costs before being abruptly sent home. One student questioned how the university admitted over 300 students when the MDCN only permits the graduation of 10 students per year in the program.
Many called the situation “a huge injustice,” blaming the university’s management for what they believe was a profit-driven decision that ignored regulatory standards.
Reports further indicate that the Vice Chancellor warned students against staging any form of protest, a move that has further intensified resentment among the displaced students.
As the issue unfolds, students and their families are calling for accountability and demanding a reversal of the university’s decision, urging the Federal Government and MDCN to intervene and provide a clear resolution.
