Oyo Government Denies Plans to Tax Weddings, Burials, and Other Social Events

The Oyo State Government has refuted online reports alleging plans to impose taxes on social events such as weddings, burials, and naming ceremonies.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, described the claims as fake and aimed at discrediting Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.

He explained that the viral document lacked a valid revenue code, official signatures, and the address of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Office, all of which are mandatory for authentic government notices.

Residents were urged to disregard the false information and rely on official sources.

The Oyo State Government has dismissed reports circulating online that it intends to introduce new taxes on social events such as weddings, burials, and naming ceremonies held within the state.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government described the reports as false and misleading, stating that they were fabricated to tarnish the image of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.

Oyelade clarified that any official government document related to taxes or levies in the state must include a valid revenue code for payment and carry the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board (OYIRS). He noted that the viral document circulating online failed to meet any of these requirements.

The commissioner also pointed out that the alleged tax notice did not contain the official address of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Office, a key feature of genuine government communications.

He urged residents of Oyo State to disregard the fake report and verify any information regarding taxes or levies through official government channels.

According to him, the Makinde administration remains committed to transparency and accountability and would never impose unnecessary financial burdens on citizens.
