Pour one out
Skype has finally died.
In February, Microsoft announced that it would shut down the video calling platform and replace it with a free version of Microsoft Teams. The day has finally come when Microsoft will be officially making the move, and burying its old video calling platform.
The free version of Teams supports message history, group chats, and contacts carried over from existing Skype accounts. However, it will no longer support Skype credits or domestic and international calls.
In March 2020, Microsoft reported that Skype had 40 million daily active users, which has dropped by over four million over the past few years. Meanwhile, Teams surpassed over 300 million monthly users in Q1 2023 alone.
I never really got into Skype, I probably won’t be missing it very much, especially with alternatives like Google Meet and Teams. And back in the day, I’d chat over MSN messenger.
