The decision was made during a heated council meeting where journalists were also escorted out by municipality security on Wednesday afternoon, 29 January 2025.

A motion of no confidence against the ANC mayor passed with 47 councillors voting.

Two abstained, and the ANC received 21 votes, while the DA and partners garnered 26 votes.

The motion was prompted by accusations against Maloka, alleging she contributed to the municipality’s decline and was involved in controversies over an expensive, unwanted, malfunctioning car and a missing mayoral chain.

Maloka, along with her driver, is under investigation after the costly municipal car broke down, allegedly due to a foreign substance in its engine.

The car is reportedly hidden at the Vaal Technorama Museum in Vereeniging.

In addition, Mayor Maloka is under scrutiny regarding the disappearance of a mayoral chain, which went missing five months before being reported.

Despite Sedibeng District facing significant financial difficulties and service delivery issues, Mayor Maloka allegedly continued to demand a new R700,000 car, customised to her liking.

Democratic Alliance Sedibeng Caucus Leader, Cllr Sibusiso Dyonase, said his party supports the successful Motion of No Confidence against Executive Mayor Cllr Lerato Maloka.

“The Sedibeng District Municipality is finally rid of the ineffective and problematic Executive Mayor,” he said.

Dyonase stated that the DA, alongside other councillors, voted Mayor Maloka out of office.

Within the next 14 days, another council meeting will be convened to elect a new mayor.

“In the run-up to this meeting, the DA will consider all its options as they continue to act in the best interest of all residents in the Sedibeng District,” said Dyonase.
