The annual Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film & Television Awards opens to recognise KZN talents. The popular awards celebrate outstanding KZN talent in films and television, both in front of and behind the camera, and have opened entries for their 12th annual ceremony.

Talents are invited to submit entries by Friday, March 28, with nominees set to be announced by the end of June 2025. The award ceremony will be held at The Playhouse in Durban, KZN on July 19.

Entries are open to filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals who are either born in KZN or are permanent residents of the province.

These awards have recognised many talents from KZN, including Thembinkosi Mthembu, Deli Malinga, Melusi Yeni, Baby Cele, Wiseman Mncube, Slindile Nodangala, Thembi Mtshali-Jones, and many more.

The 2025 award ceremony is themed “African Champions of Storytelling: From Piers to Pages.”

Acting chief executive officer of KZN Tourism and Film Authority, Sibusiso Gumbi, said the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards continue to elevate the stories and storytellers of KZN.

“These awards are not just about recognising talent but also about ensuring that our province remains the heartbeat of South African cinema and a destination of choice for local and international productions,” he said.

In 2024, Shaka iLembe dominated the ceremony, winning three top awards out of eight nominations. Actor Thembinkosi Mthembu won Best Actor for TV, Ziya Xulu won Best Newcomer Actress, and production designer Dylan Lloyd won Best Production Design.

Additionally, the awards honoured legendary actress Cynthia Shange with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Umkhokha: The Curse actress Deli Malinga won Best Actress for TV, while Melusi Yeni received his first-ever award for Best Supporting Actor for TV, for his role on Sibongile & The Dlaminis.
