Tumi Masemola opens up about her relationship with Mandla N. Photo by Drum
FORMER City Ses’la and singer Tumi M has finally come out of hiding.
Tumi has been silent since her separation from top producer Mandla N.
She went on Engineer Your Life podcast to reveal what happened with their relationship and what led to it finally breaking.
“We were fantastic business partners. I think the cracks in the romantic relationship were not showing because of the success. Because we are so passionate about media, and we were both so multi-talented and were living the dream, I didn’t see when the cracks started to show. I didn’t see the red tape or the red flags because performing all over the world made it better. The healthy bank account was making it so much better,” she said.
Tumi also pulled a shocker, revealing they never got married.
“The conversation almost always ended up in a huge argument. So, that’s when I realised we both don’t want the same thing. In the beginning, I was patient, and we met young. We did everything together. To me, I felt that I needed to give him the opportunity to mature and for him to want this [marriage]. And not for me to put pressure on or put an ultimatum.
“It was the cause of much conflict in our relationship. We did break up a couple of times because of that. He made a valid point about whether marriage was necessary because we were already living together and had kids. By the time he was ready, on my side, the damage was already done,” she said.

When they separated in 2019, Tumi was accused of stealing R2,2 million from their business account.
However, Tumi said she didn’t steal the money.
“I wouldn’t say I stole, but I wanted to leave, and he still wanted to work things out. And in my stubborn era, I said I wasn’t going to work things out. I said he’d either leave me and the children or I’d leave. He was unwilling to leave, and I was unwilling to go home.
“I wanted to have my own place with my own stuff. I went to our account and took what I believed was mine, which was 50%. Court time came, and because we had been in a romantic partnership, there was no shareholders agreement or my managing director appointment letter. So, I couldn’t provide any of that. All my accounts were frozen, the money was out back, and I went to stay with my mum,” she said.
Tumi said she was in a better space now.
“I allowed people to give me guidance, and I became open to learning. I became a sponge where spirituality was concerned. Once I started understanding myself as a spiritual being with a purpose, it made me understand the conflict and unease I had been living with all along.
“I started doing shadow work and journaling. I had a few therapy sessions, and when I do something, I go all in. That helped me mentally to be able to get out again. For quite some time, I couldn’t even go out to buy bread because I’d meet someone, and they asked why I didn’t give the money back. I didn’t know how to react to that,” she said.
When Daily Sun reached out to Mandla N, he said he hadn’t seen the podcast and asked that the video be shared with him.
He didn’t respond to messages from Daily Sun after that.
