Sri Lanka is expanding its free tourist visa initiative to 40 countries starting July 2025.
The policy aims to revitalize tourism and boost economic growth.
Eligible travelers will no longer pay visa application fees, making visits more affordable.
In a bold move to revitalize its tourism industry and stimulate economic growth, Sri Lanka has announced an expansion of its free tourist visa initiative to include 40 countries, effective from July 2025.
The updated policy removes visa application fees for eligible travelers, making visits to the island nation more accessible and affordable. While visitors are still required to apply online before arrival, the usual visa charges have been eliminated.
Authorities describe the measure as a vital part of Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to rebuild its economy by boosting foreign tourism and increasing foreign currency inflow, following years of economic strain.
Initially launched in 2023 with just seven participating nations such as China, India, and Russia the scheme now encompasses key markets across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Oceania, and the Middle East.
Among the newly included countries are the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Australia, and South Africa. Although the official government gazette has yet to publish the full list, reliable sources confirm these nations are part of the program’s expansion.
How Tourists Can Apply for the Free Visa
Citizens from the 40 eligible countries can now apply for a short-term tourist visa at no cost. The application process remains mandatory and is completed online through Sri Lanka’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system.
Applicants must provide essential travel documents such as a valid passport (with at least six months remaining), confirmed return flight tickets, and details of accommodation. While a travel itinerary is optional, it is recommended.
In some cases, travelers may also be issued a free visa upon arrival, but officials advise confirming eligibility in advance.
Visa processing generally takes 24 to 48 hours, so applicants are encouraged to apply a few days prior to travel. The visa allows for a stay of up to 30 days and is issued as a single-entry permit. Those wishing to extend their visit can apply for up to 90 additional days through the Department of Immigration in Colombo.
Real-time updates on visa application status are available through the ETA portal using the applicant’s passport and reference numbers.
It’s important to note that the free visa is strictly for tourism and does not allow for employment or long-term residence.
The Motivation Behind the Policy
According to Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the decision to expand the visa-free entry program is designed to simplify travel and encourage more international visitors.
Although the country expects to forgo about $66 million in visa fee revenue, officials believe this will be offset by increased spending from tourists on services like hotels, transport, dining, and entertainment.
With the Sri Lankan rupee showing signs of stabilization and the country offering good value for money, officials hope the new policy will firmly establish Sri Lanka as one of the most appealing travel destinations in the region.
