The Super Eagles of Nigeria might be watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup from their various homes when the competition kicks off next year.

The West African giants came into the game against South Africa in third place six points behind the group leaders. The Super Eagles fail to pick up maximum points away to South Africa in Bloemfontein, leaving Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup hopes hanging on a tiny thread.

The game, which was played on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, ended 1-1 between both sides. South Africa scored the opening goal with an own goal from William Troost-Ekong while Calvin Bassey scored the equaliser before halftime.

This result leaves Nigeria in a dangerous position with two matches left to play in the group. The Super Eagles are with 11 points, which is six points behind South Africa, who are topping group C with 17 points.
