The trial reserved a portion of Telus’ 5G network to operate CCTV cameras during the high-traffic event.

Telus successfully trialled a 5G priority slice technology, which it says increased public safety during the Edmonton Oilers’ Stanley Cup Playoffs run.

Developed in collaboration with the Edmonton Police Department, the new network tech was implemented during playoff games to stress test the service and to see how it performs during a high-profile event for most telecommunications networks, which often results in slowdowns. According to an email Telus sent to MobileSyrup, the service “demonstrated flawless performance of critical surveillance systems.”

This trial marks the first time a 5G network slice has been used for emergency services.

Network slicing is one of many features enabled by 5G. Slicing allows providers to create isolated, end-to-end networks tailored to specific requirements on the same physical infrastructure.

During peaks of high network congestion, Telus’ priority slice maintained 100 per cent network availability, which ensured high-quality and uninterrupted video streams from CCTV cameras across downtown Edmonton. These cameras provided Edmonton Police with real-time visual coverage and reliable, continuous situational awareness needed for crowd management during the playoff games, which are high-traffic and busy with countless fans.

Telus has been expanding its 5G reach and using it in several public spaces in Alberta. Most recently, it implemented a 5G private network inside the Calgary Airport (which I barely missed out on when I was there in April). Currently, there are no updates as to whether the 5G priority slice service will be implemented elsewhere for other police departments.
