An American missionary has accused the Benue State Government of blocking his attempt to build a market in Yelwata village, alleging that officials inflated the project cost to ₦300 million instead of the ₦60 million he proposed.
An American missionary has accused the Benue State Government of deliberately frustrating his efforts to rebuild Yelwata village after a recent bandit attack.
In a video circulating online, the missionary said he approached the state government with a plan to construct a market for residents of Yelwata as part of post-attack recovery efforts. However, he claimed the proposal was rejected by the government, which instead presented him with a market design allegedly valued at ₦300 million.
According to the missionary, the cost was grossly inflated, insisting that the same project could be completed for no more than ₦60 million. He further argued that there is no village market anywhere in Nigeria that should cost ₦300 million to build.
He also alleged that some individuals are taking advantage of the hardship faced by Benue communities affected by bandit attacks, using reconstruction efforts as an opportunity for personal enrichment rather than genuine relief.
The allegations have sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for transparency and accountability in post-crisis reconstruction projects.
