Togolese international footballer Samuel Asamoah, 31, has suffered a broken neck after colliding head-first with an LED advertising board during a Chinese second-tier league match between Guangxi Pingguo and Chongqing Tonglianglong.
The midfielder sustained multiple neck fractures and nerve damage, leaving him at risk of “high-level paraplegia,” which could cause permanent paralysis from the chest down. He was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery, and is now in stable condition.
Guangxi Pingguo FC thanked fans for their concern, saying updates on his recovery will be provided after further medical assessments.
Asamoah’s accident has reignited debate over player safety and dangerous pitch-side structures. It follows similar incidents, including the death of 21-year-old Billy Vigar, who suffered fatal head injuries after colliding with a wall, and the near-fatal injury of Jack Fletcher, who retired early after a crash with concrete hoardings.
