Kenyan activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, missing for over five weeks, have been released from detention in Uganda following diplomatic interventions.
They were initially detained after attending a rally supporting opposition leader Bobi Wine.
Their release has been welcomed by supporters and human rights groups, who see it as a victory for civic activism and regional human rights.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed that Kenyan activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, missing for over five weeks, were detained by Ugandan security agents.
The men were reportedly taken after attending a rally supporting opposition leader Bobi Wine. Museveni described them as āexperts in riotsā and said they were held temporarily for interfering in Ugandaās internal affairs.
Following diplomatic appeals from Kenyan leaders, Njagi and Oyoo were released and reunited with supporters at Nairobiās Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Kenyaās Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi confirmed the release resulted from sustained diplomatic engagement.
Human rights group Vocal Africa hailed the development as a victory for civic activism and the protection of regional human rights.
