Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Match PreviewIt’s an all-English match-up in the final of the Europa League, and the irony is that one of the biggest prizes in European club football – plus Champions League qualification – will go to a team that has struggled desperately domestically.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have endured dreadful seasons on home soil, occupying the two spots directly above the Premier League relegation zone – Spurs in 17th and United in 16th. More competition from those in the drop zone, and relegation might have been a genuine threat, which is unthinkable for clubs of that stature, and unthinkable that a team playing in the Championship in England might be competing with Europe’s elite in the Champions League next term.

Champions League qualification, automatically bestowed upon the winner of the Europa League, is one of the big talking points ahead of this final. It could mean a cash injection of more than £100 million. Does that prize add to the magnitude of the occasion? Or does it in fact devalue the trophy in itself?

That will depend on your point of view, but neither side would turn their nose up at this piece of silverware, not least their managers. United’s Ruben Amorim was brought in mid-season to replace Erik ten Hag but has only overseen a further slide into the doldrums. A trophy would ease any growing pressure on his shoulders, in the same way that Ten Hag’s FA Cup win last season arguably suckered the owner Jim Ratcliffe into keeping him on.

There is even greater pressure on Spurs’ Ange Postecoglou, some of which has been brought on my the man himself and his assertions that he ‘always’ wins a trophy in his second season in charge of a club. Come good on that promise, and he might just be able to stick around for next season, but if not, you sense his head will be the latest on Daniel Levy’s chopping block.

Spurs’ last trophy came in 2008 in the EFL Cup, and their fans are keen for more after several near misses and some of their best ever squads in the intervening period. United have far more trophies in their cabinet but for a side that has won the Champions League three times and England’s top division 20 times, their overall expectations are greater.

United won this competition in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and lost in the final in 2021. Spurs have twice won this title under its former guise, the UEFA Cup, in 1972 and 1984.

As for the match itself, it’s hard to predict, given the inconsistent nature of these two sides. United can look full of vim and vigour on occasion, but too often they have looked lifeless and flat. Likewise, Spurs can be a bundle of creative energy and threat, but they can also appear comically inept in defensive shape.

Whatever happens, you don’t get the sense it’ll be dull.
