Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has penned a new contract with the club, extending his tenure at the Etihad Stadium until 2034. The Norwegian forward initially joined the Premier League champions from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and has since netted an impressive 111 goals in 126 appearances.
Haaland’s previous deal, which included a release clause, was set to expire in 2027. The new agreement will see the prolific striker remain with City into his mid-30s, provided he stays for the entirety of the contract’s duration.
Expressing his excitement about the extended stay, Haaland said: “I’m thrilled to commit my future to this exceptional club. Manchester City has been an incredible place for me, surrounded by fantastic people and amazing supporters who inspire me to perform at my best. I owe a lot to [manager] Pep [Guardiola], the coaching staff, my teammates, and everyone at the club for their support over the past few years.”
A historic deal and continued success
Haaland’s new agreement is the longest active player contract in the Premier League, surpassing the nine-year deal Chelsea’s Cole Palmer signed in 2023. During his time in Manchester, the forward has already secured significant silverware, including two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and the Super Cup.
Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, praised the forward’s commitment, stating: “This long-term agreement reflects our faith in Erling and his affection for Manchester City. It’s a testament to the strong bond between the player and the club.”
Despite speculation that Haaland’s future at City might be tied to Guardiola’s presence, his decision to sign this long-term deal signals otherwise. Guardiola himself recently extended his contract, committing to the club for an additional two years.
City’s current standing amid uncertainty
This season, Haaland has already scored 21 goals in 28 matches. However, City faces challenges in their Premier League campaign, currently trailing league leaders Liverpool by 12 points, having played one more game than the Reds.
Haaland’s contract extension also coincides with a period of scrutiny for the club. City is awaiting the outcome of a disciplinary case involving 115 alleged breaches of Premier League regulations. The club has denied the charges but could face significant penalties if found guilty.
With Haaland’s new deal in place, Manchester City has secured the services of one of the world’s best strikers for the foreseeable future, underscoring their ambitions for sustained success.
